Taking the shahada is one of the most beautiful moments in a person's life. You have entered Islam with a clean slate — all previous sins are erased, and you begin a new journey toward Allah.
But after the joy comes a question: What do I do now?
This guide is written especially for new Muslims. It is simple, practical and free from overwhelming details. Take one step at a time.
1. Understand what you just said
The shahada is:
"Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasoolullah." > "I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah."
This is the foundation of Islam. It means: - Allah alone deserves worship. - Muhammad ﷺ is His final Messenger. - Everything in Islam flows from these two truths.
2. Learn how to pray — start with one prayer
Salah is the second pillar of Islam and your daily connection with Allah. Do not try to perfect all five prayers on day one. Start with one. Learn the steps of wudu and salah, and build from there.

3. Read the Quran in a language you understand
The Quran is Allah's direct speech. Start by reading the meaning in your own language. You do not need to be a scholar to benefit. Even one verse that moves your heart is enough.
Recommended starting points: - Surah Al-Fatihah — the opening chapter, recited in every prayer. - Surah Al-Ikhlas — the purity of Allah's oneness. - Surah Ar-Rahman — a beautiful reminder of Allah's mercy.
4. Find good company
Islam is not meant to be lived alone. Try to connect with a local mosque, Islamic center or online community of sincere Muslims. Good friends will remind you of Allah, answer your questions and support you.
"A person follows the religion of his close friend, so let each one of you look at whom he befriends." — Sunan Abu Dawud
5. Take it slow — Allah loves consistent deeds
You do not have to change everything overnight. The Prophet ﷺ said:
"The most beloved of deeds to Allah are those that are consistent, even if they are small." — Saheeh al-Bukhari
Start with: - Praying one prayer on time. - Reading one page of Quran daily. - Removing one major haram habit. - Learning one new thing about Islam each week.
6. Ask questions without fear
Every new Muslim has questions. That is healthy. Ask trusted people, read reliable sources, and never feel ashamed for not knowing.

7. Protect your heart from doubts
After accepting Islam, you may face doubts — from others or from your own mind. Remember: - Doubts are normal; what matters is seeking answers. - Islam has stood for over 1400 years and has answers to every sincere question. - Make dua: "Allahumma arinal haqqa haqqan warzuqnat tiba'ah..."
8. Learn the basics of belief
Every Muslim should know the six articles of faith: 1. Belief in Allah. 2. Belief in the angels. 3. Belief in the revealed books. 4. Belief in the Prophets. 5. Belief in the Day of Judgment. 6. Belief in divine decree.
Our Foundations of Faith module explains these simply.
A message to every new Muslim
Welcome to the ummah of Muhammad ﷺ. You are not behind. You are not less than born Muslims. You are a beloved guest of Allah, and He chose you to guide.
Take it day by day. Make dua. Stay connected to the Quran. And remember: every step you take toward Allah, He runs toward you.
May Allah make your faith firm, your path easy and your hereafter successful. Ameen.
