Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is one of the most influential figures in human history. Yet in popular media he is often misunderstood. Here are ten surprising, historically documented facts that every non-Muslim should know.
1. He was born an orphan and remained humble
Muhammad ﷺ was born in Mecca in 570 CE. His father died before he was born, and his mother died when he was six. Despite later becoming the leader of Arabia, he lived simply, mended his own clothes and served his family.
2. He was known as "the Trustworthy" even before prophethood
Long before he claimed prophethood, the people of Mecca called him Al-Amin — the Trustworthy. They entrusted him with their valuables and disputes because of his honesty.
3. He received the first revelation at age 40
At 40, while meditating in a cave outside Mecca, Muhammad ﷺ received the first verses of the Quran from the Angel Jibreel (Gabriel). The first word revealed was "Read" — a religion that begins with learning.
4. He taught that all races are equal
In his final sermon, the Prophet ﷺ said:
"No Arab has any superiority over a non-Arab, and no non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab... except by piety and good action."
This was revolutionary in a society divided by tribal pride.
5. He gave women rights 1400 years ago
Before Islam, women in Arabia had few rights. The Prophet ﷺ: - Gave women the right to inherit property. - Gave them the right to divorce. - Taught that seeking knowledge is obligatory for every Muslim man and woman. - Honored mothers as the most deserving of kindness.
6. He never took revenge for personal insults
When the Prophet ﷺ returned to Mecca as a conqueror, he forgave the very people who had persecuted him for years. He said:
"Go, you are free."
This mercy transformed enemies into devoted followers.
7. He prohibited harming civilians and the environment
The Prophet ﷺ gave clear commands to Muslim armies: - Do not kill women, children or the elderly. - Do not destroy crops, trees or places of worship. - Treat prisoners with kindness.
These rules predate modern international humanitarian law by centuries.
8. He emphasized kindness to animals
A man once saw a bird distressed because someone had taken its chicks. The Prophet ﷺ said:
"Who has taken the nestlings away from this bird? Return them to her, for she has been distressed."
He also taught that a woman entered Paradise for giving water to a thirsty dog.
9. His teachings transformed a divided society
Within just 23 years, the Prophet ﷺ united warring Arabian tribes, ended idol worship, abolished racism, elevated women and established a society built on justice and compassion.
10. He is mentioned in historical records outside Islam
Byzantine, Persian and Syriac sources from the 7th century confirm the rise of a prophet in Arabia who united the Arabs under a new religion. His impact was not limited to Islamic texts.
Why does this matter?
If you are curious about Islam, the best place to start is the person at its center. The Prophet ﷺ was not a warrior-king seeking power. He was a man who gave up everything to deliver a message from the Creator.
